Position: Transformer Design Engineer – (Electrical)

We are looking for a full-time Transformer Electrical Design Engineer to add to our motivated, entrepreneurial, and energetic team.

Overall Responsibility:   Reporting to the Director of Engineering, this position is responsible for obtaining a thorough understanding of the transformer technical design requirements as they relate to scope while delivering product; on time at cost, and to specification.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working knowledge of single and three phase oil filled distribution up to 3MVA - 34.5KV and Power transformers up to 15MVA - 69kV
  • Design oil filled distribution and Power transformers on time, at cost, and to CSA/IEEE or Customer technical specification.
  • Design different type of transformer core and windings such as wound core or stacked core.
  • Maintain a working database of conductor and insulating materials to be warehoused.
  • Working with the Engineering team to analyze and optimize existing products.
  • Prepare a list of engineering deliverables and time-based functions to facilitate the planning and budget control of the engineering budget.
  • Maintain the project scope of work documentation and revisions as required during the design evolution.
  • Review and execute the electrical and layout design criteria documents.
  • Review electrical technical deliverables (specifications, datasheets, drawings, etc.).
  • Assist in the preparation and development of project-specific procedures.
  • Define the system requirements to achieve the project results and monitor effectiveness.
  • Represent the electrical practice in project engineering coordination meetings.
  • Participate in electrical design reviews and transformer testing (routine and special tests)
  • Coordinate between the electrical team and other departments to ensure all activities are being performed as the design evolves.
  • Ensure that quality audits of engineering work are carried out in accordance with project procedures and the quality assurance plan. Respond to inquiries regarding technical aspects of transformers from customers, production department, CSA and UL.
  • Ensure that all work designed, manufactured, and supplied in the electrical engineering discipline complies with the relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).

Qualification, Skills and Experiences

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineering designation in Ontario (“P.Eng.”) is preferred.
  • 8-10 years of electrical design experience in a power transformer design and heavy industrial environment.
  • Strong understanding of procurement, contracting, and commissioning methodologies.
  • Strong knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards as it relates to North America (CSA, ANSI, IEEE ) standards or IEC Standards.
  • Knowledge of specifications of large high-voltage transformers and related protection systems.
  • Strong Knowledge of electrical design and engineering calculations. Experience with industry transformer design software such as OPS, etc… is a plus!
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to convey project technical information to project managers, customers, and peers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Proven organizational skills, as well as the ability to multi-task, prioritize, take direction, and provide guidance to others to ensure the quality of deliverables.
